FORD Capri 3100 has practically become a classic in the CARRERA lineup. We first added it to our lineup in 2009, and since then, we’ve released seven models. After a hiatus of several years, the Weisberg Racing model was released last year. This year, we once again have one in our lineup: the olive-brown-yellow model with start number 3 from 1974. I’ll admit, I simply couldn’t find any information on the original car. Since the car doesn’t have the usual Race 3, 4, or 5 designation, I’m assuming that this time it’s an original car that served as the model. Plus, the psychedelic color scheme strongly supports that theory. The RS 3100 was a further development of the highly successful RS 2600; in 1974, the car, equipped with a 3.4-liter Cosworth engine featuring new valve technology, delivered about 415 PS. This was also necessary to keep up with the BMW 3.5 C SL lightweight coupes, which were extremely successful at the time. Unfortunately, the aftermath of the 1973 energy crisis forced the manufacturers to generally scale back their motorsports activities. BMW, for example, stopped entering factory cars in the top division of the DRM altogether. The FORD factory racing team’s involvement ended around 1975–76, and the remaining stock of factory cars was sold to private drivers and enthusiasts.
