Test report on the Carrera DIGITAL 132 Porsche 918 Spyder GULF Racing
Art. No.: 20030788
If you still want a Porsche 918 Spyder, you are definitely too late:
918 units of the 887 hp racer were produced, and it was never intended to be more. Production ended in 2015 and the car was also available to buy in various retro designs (z.B. MARTINI, which we also know from the racetrack). However, the most exclusive versions are probably the cars in GULF livery, of which only 2 were produced.
The initiator of the two vehicles was the Canadian Vaughn Wyant, President of the Wyant Group, which also owns the Porsche Center in Saskatoon, Canada. https://porschecentresaskatchewan.com/
Since Porsche no longer had a contractual relationship with the GULF OIL Company and therefore had no rights to use the original blue-orange color scheme, Mr. Wyant asked GULF Canada if he could paint two vehicles in the GULF colors. GULF agreed after lengthy negotiations, and Porsche also gave its OK. The decision may have been influenced by the advertising effect of the vehicles, as the GULF brand was only reintroduced in Canada in 2015 after a 30-year absence from the market.
After the official blessing "from above", Mr. Wyant commissioned a team of designers to create the paintwork of the two Porsches based on the old Porsche 917K Gulf to be absolutely "contemporary": Analysis of the paintwork based on old original photos, correct fit and width of the center stripes, etc., all with the support of Porsche AG. Both vehicles differ only in minor details, for example, no. 1 has blue piping on the seats, while the second has orange stitching.
Although a few other 918 owners have also repainted their vehicles in GULF livery and added decals, these two Porsches are the only "Gulf Livery Period Correct" cars that were also officially manufactured with factory approval from PORSCHE and GULF.
