this car looks familiar to you, there’s a reason: as far back as 2009, CARRERA already had the black 1977 Pontiac Trans Am in its lineup, back then featuring the movie livery from “Smokey and the Bandit.” Burt Reynolds plays the trucker Bandit, who is tasked with smuggling 400 cases of COORS beer from Texas to Georgia.
The current Pontiac features the classic black paint scheme, but it’s no coincidence that it’s reminiscent of the movie car: Our driver, of course, wears a Stetson just like Bandit! Even the license plate pays homage to the film: “EASTBND Georgia” likely stands for “Eastbound Georgia,” a stretch of Interstate 20 that the Bandit drove along during his “chase.” For visitors to the U.S. and movie fans: here’s where you can follow the route; I’m quoting from the RoadTrippers website: “You only have 28 hours to pick up 400 cases of Coors Beer in Texarkana and get them back to Atlanta while stopping at all the important filming locations used in *Smokey & the Bandit*.” https://roadtrippers.com/trips/14631577
The Firebird was really beautifully recreated. Of course, the obligatory Firebird emblem on the hood is there; the paint job and decals are crisp and flawless.
The Pontiac sits steady and solid on the road. The engine is responsive and picks up speed well; the soft rubber compound of the tires literally grips the track surface.
For fans of American muscle cars, the Firebird is definitely a must-have—and not just because of its looks and great handling!
