The Mainzelmännchen

Porsche 2019 is the year of the ZDF Porsche. In the large 1:124 scale, it features the Carrera well-known Porsche 906 with the ZDF logo on the hood and sides, and the Mainzelmännchen “Det” on the flanks of the vehicle. In 1:132 scale, the Porsche 904 GTS comes in silver with a yellow hood, start number 66, and orange stripes on the roof. Here, too, the Mainzelmännchen are featured on the sides. For the younger folks among us who don’t watch public television: The Mainzelmännchen are six animated characters that serve as so-called commercial break fillers on ZDF. They also make occasional appearances on the satirical show “heute-show.”

In 1966, the first attempt was made to broadcast a live onboard feed from the race at the Nürburgring. Footage from the Porsche was transmitted by helicopter to the broadcast van and from there to households. The Porsche had a permanently installed recording device on the passenger side, which unfortunately is not visible in the model or was not included in it. An antenna was also mounted on the roof. The car was driven by Paul Frère and Rainer Günzler at the 1,000-km race at the Nürburgring. Rainer Günzler was ZDF’s star reporter when it came to racing and motorsports. It was his idea to accompany the 1,000-km race at the Nürburgring in 1966 in a camera van and broadcast it live. A Bundeswehr helicopter served as a relay station, and the Porsche was leased from the factory. Carrying 70 kg of additional weight, Günzler and Belgian driver Paul Frère started from 26th position after posting lap times of 9:35 min in practice. Under certain circumstances, both might even have finished in the top 15 if they hadn't had to end the race at the end of the live broadcast. A total of 18 laps were completed, though live commentary was omitted due to poor sound quality.
