The car was owned by Niki Lauda, who declined the factory car he was entitled to and instead raced his own white-and-signal-red car in the 1979 ProCar season, which he won convincingly.
In the ProCar series—which took place as part of the Formula 1 events of the time—the five fastest Formula 1 drivers were eligible to compete. They were provided with factory cars and raced against a maximum of 19 other drivers in identical vehicles.

Lauda was reportedly given a “better car,” but he denied this and attributed his success to good sets of tires. So, this is a decisive factor not only in model racing.
In reality Carrera, the BMW M1 was exactly what it Carrera is on the Carrera track: a fast and beautiful car, but one that is actually only driven in its own class.

Carrera Personally, I think the new design in Carrera the portfolio has been executed very well… sure, the Marlboro stickers are missing—just like on the originals at some races—but I’m sure some Carrera drivers already have them Carrera tucked away in their drawers, waiting to be used. Tobacco advertising isn’t just banned on toys; on the contrary, it’s now only permitted in very limited contexts.

The model’s handling is familiar—I can easily adjust the performance to my liking on the small test track within the specified speed ranges. I couldn’t spot any manufacturing defects in the decals, paint, etc.

I’m thrilled with this modern classic and hope to see more M1s in large scale.
