It happened in 1966 at the world’s most famous race in northwestern France: The light blue Ford GT 40 was set to cross the finish line first, beating its archrival Ferrari. Shortly after the Fords with start numbers 1 and 2 crossed the finish line and the race was declared over, there was great confusion. Four drivers believed they had won the race. However, due to having covered a greater distance, the GT 40 with start number 2 won, even though the car with number 1 had been in the lead. It was the closest finish in the history of this race. The Ford GT 40 was redesigned specifically for the 1966 season—the 4.7-liter engine was replaced with a larger, more powerful 7.0-liter engine to win the race.
