With the Audi A5 DTM, the 2012 DTM starting grid is nowCarrera
complete. Just like BMW and Mercedes, Audi also entered the series with a new car, the A5 DTM. And although Eduardo Mortara secured two victories for Audi over the course of the season, the title race played out exclusively between Mercedes and BMW. For its driver lineup, Audi largely relied on its proven lineup.
The Models:
The dark blue Red Bull design of Mattias Ekström’s team car has become a classic inCarrera
the
lineup: even the 2004 and 2008 Audi A4 DTM cars were produced with this look. On the current model, the paint has been given a subtle glitter effect, and the decals leave nothing to be desired.
The model, designed after Timo Scheider’s race car, stands out with its attractive two-tone white-and-yellow paint scheme. This ensures that the cars are easily distinguishable on the racetrack.
The dimensions and proportions of the models are in line with what is already known from the other two cars, the BMW and Mercedes. In terms of weight, the Audi and BMW are virtually tied, leaving the Mercedes slightly at a disadvantage here.
Test Drive:
To be honest, I’m finding it pretty hard to write anything different here than I have for the previously released DTM cars from BMW and Mercedes. All three car types are too similar in terms of their design and engineering. The Audi exhibits nearly identical handling characteristics to the BMW M3 DTM; only the Mercedes lags slightly behind due to its greater weight. Overall, I would consider all three car types to be on par; differences in handling are more likely due to the usual production tolerances in engines and magnets than to the car’s design.
Conclusion:
The two Audi A5 DTMs are in no way inferior to the other two DTM car types, either visually or technically. In terms of weight, all six vehicles still have room for improvement, especially the two Mercedes models. Nevertheless, it is now possible to put together a well-balanced and attractive DTM starting grid. I hope to see more design variations in the lineup for 2014.
