Carrera DIGITAL 132 VW Super Saloon C "No. 68"

Probably the most beautiful Beetle on the road!
Carrera DIGITAL 132 VW Beetle "Group Race 5" 1" and VW Beetle "Group Race 5" 2"
(Item Nos. 30702 and 30703)

The Beetle hits the racetrack...No, not Herbie or DuDu… more like a Beetle with mumps—that is, chubby cheeks up front—and a rear end that looks a lot like a 935.
Even if there may not be a real-life model for these two Group 5 Beetles now available, a Beetle with a V8 engine and a very similar look did race at Donington Park in 1977. … just Go try Googling “Beetle” + “Racing” … There were some pretty quirky cars back then.

Appearance:
From a purely visual standpoint, both models look really great and could easily have raced in real life. The Beetle, which is actually very sleek, has been visually widened at both the front and rear in an appealing way and brought into line with the track.

The color schemes of the Röschlein and the Scarab are already in keeping with the 1970s aesthetic and can certainly be supplemented with additional variations in green, yellow, white, orange, etc. … which could result in a very appealing field of drivers over the next 1–2 years.

The driver’s seat, roll bar, engine, and exhaust system are all rendered in fine detail. The small mirror, styled after the original Beetle, certainly won’t survive very long in racing conditions.

Technical Specs:
The cars feature front independent suspension, which allows the wheels to rotate freely. The rear axles turn smoothly and are straight, with centered rims. There’s very little space in the chassis; without magnets, it certainly won’t be easy to achieve proper trim with weights.

Workmanship:
Everything is flawless. The paint job is impeccable. The decals are applied neatly and are clearly legible. All parts fit well; no problems taking them apart or putting them back together.

Handling:
The tires have good grip; for the front tires, you might want to consider gluing and sealing them. Even though the cars are relatively tall, their width makes up for it—they handle the track well. Minor rear-end slides are quickly brought back under control. Nothing that takes away from the fun.

Conclusion:
After CarForce and HotRods, finally something again where you Carrera can really let loose… I hope they do.
