of this year’s new additions to the 132 series is the famous blue-and-yellow Porsche 917K from the GESIPA Racing Team. For the history of the car and the team, I’ll simply refer you to my 2013 review of the 124 model (I could just copy and paste that review again, but that would be too easy…).
When comparing the big one to the little one, the 124’s superior attention to detail naturally stands out. But since
Where the large and small models differ, however, is in their engine and driving characteristics.
The 124—like any car from the large scale—drives significantly more smoothly overall, though it’s also much more demanding. A 124 requires a different driving style, more practice, and greater control of the vehicle. This is also one of the main reasons why this scale has maintained such a loyal fan base over the decades. Size, length, wheelbase, engine, and weight do make a difference when they’re “more substantial.”
The small 917s, on the other hand, are very lively cars. Personally, they’re almost too lively for me—these cars literally take off “like a shot.”
Due to space constraints, they’re equipped with the well-known flat engine, which naturally has a completely different response than the large V-engine from the 124. Thanks to its powerful magnet and much lighter weight, the Porsche literally sticks to the track, making it nearly impossible to knock off course. As a result, it’s easier to drive (and therefore much more suitable for home tracks) than the much heavier “big” Porsche.
Bottom line: both are a lot of fun, but despite their visual similarities, these are two completely different cars.
