" This vehicle is the significantly souped-up (3.5 L instead of 3.0 L displacement and turbocharged by the factory team to 590 kW) racing version of a BMW E9 Series coupe. A dream car for many kids of the 1970s.
Originally driven by Tom Walkinshaw and John Fitzpatrick in the 1976 6-hour race at Silverstone, this Group 5 car secured the top spot on the podium.
When delivered, the front axle was unclipped on one side, but this was easily fixed. Afterward, it ran smoothly and straight. The tires sit nicely deep in the wheel wells and provide sufficient grip.
The lighting is bright enough for play, Carrerathough the standard white light is a bit too intense for 1970s-era prototypes—but at least it’s not a dim bulb.
Even though the paint job and the decals are, in principle, flawless, I have a strange, uneasy feeling about the color of the roof and the lower stripe that extends onto the trunk and the front spoiler. I haven’t seen the actual car in person yet, and the numerous photos online—due to scanning issues and poor lighting—hardly allow for a truly reliable assessment of the color; to my eye, the original color is a slightly lighter Go shade, similar to the Warsteiner race cars. But maybe it’s just me who isn’t feeling it in this regard.
The prototype-accurate single front windshield wiper, with its delicate mirrors, could quickly become a casualty in racing—that’s life (or you could remove it beforehand).
The handling is okay; the wide axles and tires provide the necessary stability, though the weight of over 100 grams slows it down a bit. On the track with other Group 5 cars (such as the Porsche 935), the BMW performs really well.
