Some cars drive you to despair when you have to write a review about them. The Ford Torino Talladega currently sitting in front of me is one such car. Why? Because I simply can’t find any pictures of the original vehicle. There’s really a lot of material on the internet. Especially the topic of American stock cars from the 1960s up to the present day offers a seemingly endless wealth of images for historic vehicles. In that regard, the Americans are way ahead of us. But I just can’t find the blue-and-red car with the number 72.
Just a (supposed) replica that a die-hard fan built over a period of nearly 50 years, and which comes very close to the original (both in color scheme and livery). The car was auctioned off in 2021.
The muscle car with the number 72 has a historical model—that is undisputed. The driver was BENNY PARSONS, an American stock car racer who worked as a motorsports commentator for various networks after retiring from racing. During his active career, his greatest achievements were winning the Winston Cup in 1973 and the Daytona 500 in 1975.
Of all his cars with different starting numbers, he competed in the most races with number 72: 278 between 1970 and 1978. He secured a total of twelve victories with that number and went on to win the championship with the “72.” And this despite the fact that he won only one race during the entire 1973 season! But since he competed in a total of 28 races and consistently finished in the top positions, it was enough to secure the overall victory.
And in case the name sounds familiar to any of you:
BENNY PARSONS’ yellow Talladega with the No. By the way, CARRERA released the 98 back in 2016! You can check out Chris's old review from that year!
Best regards
