Some cars drive you to despair when you have to write a report about them. The FORD Torino Talladega that is currently in front of me is such a car. Why? Because I simply can't find any pictures of the original vehicle. There really is a lot of material on the Internet. The topic of American stock cars from the 1960s to the modern era in particular offers an almost infinite wealth of images for historic vehicles. In this respect, the Americans are way ahead of us. But I just can't find the blue and red car with the number 72.
Just an (alleged) replica that a fanatical fan has built up over a period of almost 50 years, and which comes very close to the original (both in terms of color scheme and printing). The car was auctioned in 2021.
The muscle car with the number 72 has a historical role model, that is undisputed. The driver was BENNY PARSONS, an American stock car driver who worked as a motorsport commentator for various broadcasters after the end of his racing career. His greatest successes during his active career were winning the WINSTON Cup in 1973 and the DAYTONA 500 in 1975.
Of all his cars with different starting numbers, he contested the most races with the number 72: 278 in the years 1970-78. He took a total of twelve victories with the number and then also won the championship with the "72". And this despite the fact that he only won one race in the entire 1973 season! However, as he took part in a total of 28 races and always finished in the top places, it was enough to win the overall title.
And in case any of you find the name somehow familiar:
BENNY PARSONS yellow Talladega with the no. by the way, CARRERA released the 98 back in 2016! You can take a look at Chris' old test report from that year!
Liebe Grüße
