Review of the Carrera DIGITAL 132 Porsche 918 Spyder GULF Racing
Item No.: 20030788 If you
’re still hoping to get your hands on a Porsche 918 Spyder, you’re definitely too late: only
918 units of this 887-PS supercar were produced, and there were never meant to be any more. Production ended in 2015. The car was also available in various retro designs (z.B. MARTINI, which we’re familiar with from the racetrack). However, the most exclusive versions are likely the cars in GULF livery—only two were produced.
The driving force behind these two vehicles was Canadian Vaughn Wyant, president of the Wyant Group, which also owns the Porsche Center in Saskatoon, Canada. https://porschecentresaskatchewan.com/
Since Porsche was no longer contractually affiliated with the GULF OIL Company and therefore did not hold the rights to use the original blue-and-orange color scheme, Mr. Wyant asked GULF Canada if he could have two vehicles painted in the GULF colors. After protracted negotiations, GULF agreed, and Porsche also gave its approval. The decision may have been influenced by the promotional impact of the cars, as the GULF brand was only reintroduced in Canada in 2015 after a 30-year absence from the market.
After receiving official approval “from above,” Mr. Wyant commissioned a team of designers to create a paint scheme for the two Porsches that was absolutely “true to the era,” modeled after the old Porsche 917K Gulf: Analysis of the paint schemes based on old original photos, correct placement and width of the center stripes, etc.—all with the support of Porsche AG. The two vehicles differ only in minor details; for example, No. 1 has blue seat piping, while the second one has orange stitching.
While a few other 918 owners have also repainted their cars in the GULF livery and added decals, but these two Porsches are the only “Gulf Livery Period Correct” cars that were officially produced with factory approval from PORSCHE and GULF.
