The most successful team in DTM history
. One of the most visually striking new releases in the 124 series this year is Edoardo Mortara’s red Mercedes. In 2017 and 2018, the Swiss-born Italian drove for the HWA team.
The HWA team is based in Affalterbach and is part of HWA Aktiengesellschaft.
On its website, the company promotes itself with the following statement: “Automobile manufacturer, development partner, motorsports specialist, engineering expert, support service provider—there are many facets behind the three letters HWA.”
HWA was, or rather is, better known as the “Mercedes AMG Motor Sport DTM Team.” Or simply, classically, AMG (AMG stands for Aufrecht and Melker Großasbach, the two names of the founders and the founder’s birthplace).
AMG was founded in 1967; its motorsport activities were transferred in 1998 to HWA AG, founded by Hans Werner Aufrecht.
HWA is the most successful team to date in the long history of the DTM. I quote from the DTM website: “Since joining the DTM as a factory team in 1988, the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport DTM Team has won ten drivers’, 13 team, and six manufacturers’ titles. During the same period, Mercedes-AMG Motorsport DTM drivers won 181 races, including 104 one-two finishes. The team also managed five-time champion Bernd Schneider, the most successful DTM driver of all time.” At the end of 2018, Mercedes officially withdrew from the DTM. HWA continues; since 2019, HWA has been responsible for the development and racing deployment of the Aston Martin Vantage DTM cars for the R-Motorsport team.

A few words about the model:
The AMG corresponds to the real car in almost every detail. Only two things differ slightly from the original: The color is difficult to match due to production constraints; in my opinion, it should be just a touch more intense—or rather, a brilliant red. The chrome vertical ribs are missing from the grille. The tires feature the authentic Hancock branding; at least here we have a tire manufacturer that hasn’t yet let model kit manufacturers gold-plate its logo. A real gem is the superbly printed driver figure inside the car—a detail that, unfortunately, you can’t see during the race.
