The FIA World Endurance Championship …
is a racing series for Le Mans prototypes and Grand Turismo race cars that replaced the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup in 2012. The ILMC was first held in 2010 but lasted only two years.
In the GT2/GTE class, both a Manufacturers’ Champion and a Teams’ Champion were crowned. Ferrari won the Manufacturers’ Cup in 2011 (and, incidentally, in 2010 as well); in both the Teams’ and Drivers’ championships that same year, the champion was the Italian racing team AF Corse. For more information, see: www.afcorse.it
Founded in 2002 by former race car driver Amato Ferrari (who, incidentally, is not related to or by marriage to the legendary automaker from Maranello), the team enjoyed considerable success very early on in the FIA GT Championship with its Maserati MC12s. Further victories were secured in the following years with the Ferrari 430 GT, and in 2005 and 2006, the team from Piacenza went on to win the FIA GT Championship. In 2007, Motorola became the team’s main sponsor—not a bad decision for the advertising partner, as AF won 9 out of 10 races that season and secured the championship once again. In 2009, the success was repeated with a fourth consecutive title in the team standings; the team also won the drivers’ championships from 2006 to 2008.
In 2011, the team fielded the Ferrari 458 in the GT2 class for the first time. After switching to the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2012, the team competed with the 458 in both the GT2/GTE and GT3 classes. Their biggest victory here was at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Let’s move on to the modelCarrera
:
The No. 71 GT2 is painted in classic Ferrari red and adorned with racing stripes in the Italian national colors. Overall, it has a very harmonious and visually appealing look. The model’s craftsmanship leaves nothing to be desired! Only the lighting seems to show through very slightly this time as well, though somewhat less so than with the yellow JMW. The AF Corse’s racing performance is, of course, well known. Thanks to its wide tires, the car handles very well, but it has that famously narrow margin for error! So don’t take the turns too sharply ;-)
Let’s hope that more 458s will be added to the lineup in the coming years—this Ferrari is exactly what I want for a slot car track: a true race car!
