Writing club reports on Formula 1 cars isn't easy. In the end, the report boils down to a list of bombastic engine and performance specs. The research is usually boring—uh, I mean, of course, not very exciting. ;-)
This time, however, I came across an article from AUTO MOTOR SPORT from earlier this year that I’m posting in its entirety, paragraph by paragraph, because it’s just too good. So here’s a direct quote:
“Even before the unveiling of the Ferrari F14 T, there was a lot of talk about the new car. The Italians let the fans vote on the new name.” Votes were cast more than a million times on the racing team’s website. In the end, F14T narrowly prevailed over F166 Turbo. However, the new name evokes some amusing associations. Some are reminded of the U.S. fighter jet with a nearly identical name. Others see similarities between the “F14T” lettering and that of the parent company, FIAT
.”End of quote!
How could anyone possibly top an introduction like that? You just can’t do any better than that. As for the car itself, there isn’t really much to say. The F14T is the Maranello team’s F1 car for the 2014 season. Due to changes in the F1 regulations, the car is a completely new design. The Ferrari weighs just under 700 kilograms and has a 1.6-liter V6 with around 600 PS (at 15,000 rpm).
Impressive specs, especially with Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen—two of the world’s best drivers—behind the wheel. Still, it didn’t amount to much; the best finish in a race was a third-place finish by Alonso at the Chinese Grand Prix. In the overall standings, the team managed only a fourth-place finish in the Constructors’ Championship.
The model, however, makes a significantly better impression. The aesthetics are spot-on; the model faithfully reproduces the characteristic basic shape of the Ferrari F14T, and the technology is also a familiar one. Its light weight, combined with the high-revving engine, results in impressive acceleration and a top speed that’s virtually impossible to reach on standard home tracks. For this reason, it makes sense to reduce the top speed slightly.
This allows the F14TW105to keep pace with its direct CARRERA competitor, the Mercedes, without any problems.
Exciting races are therefore guaranteed on your home track. Have fun!
