CASTROL Denmark

Once again this year, CARRERA brings us one of the popular BMW M1 models in yet another classic paint scheme: The 1984 M1 from the Danish CASTROL DENMARK team. CASTROL is one of the oldest lubricant manufacturers in the world; the brand was founded in 1899 by the British entrepreneur Charles C. Wakefield. The oil company has been an active sponsor in Formula 1 since 1950, but its involvement in motorsports began much earlier, in 1905, as Mr. Wakefield recognized even then that racing success drives sales. Among other things, CASTROL sponsored the Danish race car driver Jens Winther, who established his own TEAM CASTROL DENMARK from 1984 to 1986. Born in 1938 on the Baltic Sea island of Zealand, the Dane was still racing the BMW M1 in its legendary golden WARSTEINER livery in 1983 (another car we’d love to see on the racetrack! (Hint, hint!!!)),, he founded his own team in 1984 and competed in various races in the following years at Spa, Brands Hatch, Mugello, Hockenheim, Kyalami, Silverstone, the Nürburgring, and, of course, Le Mans. Unfortunately, he was forced to retire from the 1984 Le Mans race in this BMW due to damage to the left front suspension. His best result at Le Mans was 11th place overall and second place in Group C2 (Junior Group) in 1986, driving a CRD race car. He then retired from racing at the height of his career.
