The Schnitzer brothers' racing division was founded as "Team Schnitzer" as early as 1966 and has been highly successful, primarily with BMWwith great success in the German Racing Championship and the German Touring Car Championship, and claimed multiple victories in the famous 24-hour races at Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring.
In 1999, the team even won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the BMW V12 LMR—if you think back far enough, you might remember something about that ;
In the World Touring Car Championship and the DTM, Team Schnitzer also competed as a BMW factory team (at that time sporting the classic BMW factory liveries in M Design).
A complete list of Team Schnitzer’s racing series, vehicles, and achievements would far exceed the scope of this report.
Following the announcement that BMW will end its factory support, Team Schnitzer is expected to close its doors for good at the end of 2021.
The BMW M6 GT3 presented here as a 132 Digital model is likely familiar to most in its factory livery. Augusto Fahrfus drove this red, white, and yellow livery—featuring sponsor Shell—to victory at the 2018 Macau race, which explains the Chinese characters on the car. The “Thank You, Charly!” on the left side of the hood refers to the retirement and farewell race in Macau of longtime Schnitzer team boss Charly Lamm, who passed away shortly thereafter.
In terms of handling, the M6 is a bit more subdued than other GTs. It has good top-end speed and is very easy to control, but the weight is still a bit on the heavy side. Thanks to its stability and smoothness, it might actually be possible to leave the short, fast cars behind during longer races. Hectic and aggressive driving styles aren’t really called for in endurance races. As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing to criticize about the car’s build quality or the finish of the paint and decals. Even the small red stripe above the door handles is faithfully reproduced on the model.
