"35 Years of the VW Golf GTi"
Test report by CoMod Lotus on the / Carrera DIGITAL 132Evolution Volkswagen Golf24 No. 235, 2011 Nürburgring 24 Hours (Art.Nr. 30631/27422)

The first VW Golf GTI was introduced in 1976 . Equipped with the 1.6-liter engine from the Audi 80 GTE of that time, the compact car was actually intended only as a niche model by a few motorsport-crazy VW employees. VW’s CEO at the time, Schmücker, had hoped to sell about 5,000 units in total; in fact, more than 20,000 units were sold in the first year alone after production began.

Over the decades, the GTi designation has become synonymous with an entire class of vehicles: high-performance sport versions of production compact cars.
To mark the 35th anniversary, VW has built three very special GTis to compete in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.

The three VWs are equipped with technology from the Audi RS3. A 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine that currently produces 340 PS in the Audi RS3 and Audi TT RS, but has been boosted by another 100 PS to 440 PS for the endurance race. It also features wide fenders, a rear spoiler, various air intakes, and more, ensuring the car is aerodynamically optimized for racing. The three cars bear the starting numbers 35, 135, and 235.

The version Carreraproduced for our race tracks is number 235, which u.a. will be driven by Formula 1 legends Johnny Herbert and Mark Blundell. Visually, the three Golfs differ only in their starting numbers and the colored stripes on the hood.

Incidentally, the three VWs were equally “successful” at last year’s 24-hour race: all three had to retire early, with the No. 235 featured here dropping out due to transmission damage. Let's hope that this very agile and lively Carrera model is spared from these problems!

Best regards,
