It happened in 1966 at the world's most famous race in the northwest of France: The light blue Ford GT 40 was to cross the finish line first, beating archrival Ferrari in the process. Shortly after the Fords with starting numbers 1 and 2 crossed the finish line and the race was waved off, the confusion was great. Four drivers thought they had won the race. However, due to the higher distance covered, the GT 40 with the starting number 2 won, although the car with the number 1 was in the lead. It was the closest finish of all time in this race. The Ford GT 40 was redesigned especially for the 1966 season - the 4.7 liter engine was replaced by a larger, more powerful 7.0 liter engine to win the race.
